Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a form of treatment utilizing physiologic principles (related to the healthy functioning of your body) to manage illness or injury.

Patients who can benefit from physical therapy include those recovering from an orthopaedic injury (such as a fracture, ligament sprain or tendinitis); neurological injury (such as a stroke or spinal cord trauma) or chronic painful ailments such as arthritis or neck pain. Physical therapy is also an important part of the rehabilitation process after arthroscopic or joint reconstruction surgery.

A physical therapy rehabilitation program can help reduce pain, improve strength and mobility to the affected area and facilitate a patient’s return to normal activity, including work and athletics.

Exercise—matched to the diagnosis, patient’s capability and therapy goals— is the core of physical therapy. Exercise can help to reduce pain as well as restore or improve mobility and strength to specific parts of the body. A physical therapist not only guides a patient through an appropriate exercise program but also outlines and teaches a program of exercises that the patient can do at home.

In addition to exercise, the physical therapist may also use other modalities: massage, stretching, traction, hot packs, cold compresses, ultrasound and electrical stimulation.
